Speech & Language Pathology

Speech Therapy in Encinitas, CA

The way you speak has a big impact on how you are perceived. Children who speak clearly will get better grades, be more confident, and will have better social lives. They'll have better adult outcomes as well.

That's why we're so passionate about speech-language pathology and speech and language therapy here at Integrative Learning. Our speech-language therapists provide your child with the in-depth instruction they'll need to master speech skills.

Toddler Speech Therapists

Your child doesn't have to be in school to benefit from our programs. Many speech skills develop within the first three years of a child's life. Some infants and toddlers meet developmental milestones more slowly than expected. This is called a developmental delay.

Early intervention can help infants and toddlers with delays catch up in their development.
Skills focus on five areas:

  • Physical skills (reaching, crawling, walking, drawing, building).
  • Cognitive skills (thinking, learning, problem-solving).
  • Communication skills (talking, listening, understanding others).
  • Self-help or adaptive skills (eating, dressing).
  • Social or emotional skills (playing, interacting with others).

By catching these issues and correcting them early, you can build a stronger foundation for success at school when the time comes.

Speech Therapy for Kids

Speech therapy may take place in a classroom or small group, or one-on-one, depending on the speech disorder. Speech therapy exercises and activities vary depending on your child's disorder, age, and needs.

During speech therapy for children, our pediatric speech therapist may:

  • Interact through talking or playing.
  • Use books, pictures, or other objects to help stimulate language development.
  • Model correct sounds and syllables for a child during age-appropriate play.
  • Provide homework strategies for the child, parent, or caregiver to allow for further practice.

Every program is custom-tailored to meet your child's needs.

Also, ask us about our speech therapy classes for preschool-aged children, which we are offering during the pandemic.

Speech Therapy for Adults

Sometimes adults need speech therapy, too! This can happen when an adult suffers from trauma which damages the ability to speak, or when adults want to speak more clearly and articulately, but have issues never addressed during childhood.

We do have programs for adults, and are happy to help.

Types of Language Disorders

We treat all of the following language disorders.

  • Articulation disorders - the inability to properly form certain word sounds ("thith" instead of "this").
  • Fluency disorders - disorders impacting the flow, speed, and rhythm of speech, such as stuttering or cluttering.
  • Resonance disorders - poor voice quality caused by cleft palate, neurological disorders, swollen tonsils, or other blockages of airflow.
  • Receptive disorders - difficulties understanding and processing what others say, which can cause one to seem disinterested when someone is speaking, or have trouble following directions. Can be caused by autism, hearing loss, or head injuries.
  • Expressive disorders - difficulty conveying or expressing information. May use incorrect verb tense or have trouble forming accurate sentences. Associated with developmental impairments, such as Down Syndrome and hearing loss. Can also result from head trauma, or a medical condition.
  • Cognitive-communicative disorders - difficulty communicating due to an injury of the brain which controls your ability to think. Can result in memory issues and problem-solving struggles. This is caused by biological problems, such as abnormal brain development, or neurological conditions, like strokes.
  • Aphasia - an acquired communication disorder that impacts a person's ability to speak and understand others. Often impacts a person's ability to read and write. Stroke is the most common cause.
  • Dysarthria - characterized by slow or slurred speech due to a weakness or inability to control the muscles used for speech. It's most commonly caused by a nervous system disorder or a condition that causes facial paralysis, or throat and tongue weaknesses caused by MS, ALS, or stroke.

About Our Program

We address speech disorders that develop in childhood or speech impairments in adults by incorporating the five parts of language development:

  1. Phonology
  2. Morphology
  3. Syntax
  4. Semantics
  5. Pragmatics

Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), or speech therapists, administer the program.

SLPs use speech therapy techniques to improve communication. These include articulation therapies, language intervention activities, and others, depending on the type of speech and language disorder.
